Zulu Dawn (1979): In 1879, the British suffered a great loss in the battle of Isandlwana due to incompetent leadership. Cy Endfield co-wrote the epic prequel Zulu Dawn 15 years after his hugely popular Zulu. Set in 1879, this film depicts the catastrophic Battle of Isandlwana, which remains the worst defeat the British Army by the natives, with the British contingent outnumbered 16 to 1 by members of the Zulu tribe. The opinion of the film of events becomes immediately clear in its title sequence: lush life of the African people presided over by King Cetshwayo contrasted with the aristocratic artifice under the arrogant gaze of General Lord Chelmsford (Peter O'Toole). Chelmsford is at the heart of everything that goes wrong, starting the catastrophic battle with an ultimatum apparently made in order to give his troops something to do.
